There’s Snow Place Like the Enchanted Circle: Winter Events in Northern New Mexico

Winter is the busiest time of the year in the Enchanted Circle—northern New Mexico comes alive when the snow falls, and there’s more than just skiing and snowboarding. From December through March, the mountains transform into a skier’s dream, with fresh powder and bluebird days galore. If you’re coming to town to soak up the snow, here are some events you’ll want to check out.

January

For military members, veterans and their families, Angel Fire Resort’s Military Winterfest is an event to make plans for! Taking place Jan. 26 to 29 in Angel Fire, this event offers military members and their families discounted prices for lift tickets, equipment rentals, lessons, meals at restaurants and retail stores in the region. Shred the fresh powder for less this January! Registration is required.

If you’re heading to Red River this winter, you’ll want to join the Race the Face Snowmobile Hill Climb. The competition pits snowmobile drivers against one another for a chance to win a cash prize. The contest begins at 4 p.m. on Jan. 14 at the Independence Trail.

If you’re skied out, head to Taos for the Taos Winter Wine Festival. Foodies won’t want to miss this three-day weekend of events, which features some of the city’s finest restaurants paired with wine from more than 30 wineries from around the country. The weekend ends with the Grand Tasting in Taos Valley Ski, where restaurants and wineries serve samples of their best food and wine!

February

You’ll need your skis and your cowboy hat for the Red River Ski Ranch Rodeo on Feb. 4. Participants will work together to rope, brand and saddle a calf dummy while shredding down the slopes. If you’re a country-lover and avid skier, this competition is for you!

We may be biased, but we think the best Mardi Gras celebrations take place on the slopes. Angel Fire and Red River both host Mardi Gras in the mountains and the good times definitely roll! Grab your beads and your skis or  snowboard and head to the southern Rockies this February and join the annual Mardi Gras celebrations this year!

March

The Taos Rally in the Valley is a mountain scavenger hunt involving skiing, snow, costumes and more, hosted by Taos and New Belgium Brewing. Create a team with up to four family and friends for a chance to win limited edition Fat Tire skis. If you don’t win, no worries. You can still enjoy the exclusive afterparty.

As always, spring break in the Enchanted Circle remains one of the most ideal times of the year to hit the slopes, as families and students say their final goodbyes to winter and relish the last snowfalls of the year. The Angel Fire Resort offers daily live music for visitors for your après-ski pleasure. A major perk of spring break skiing? Plenty of sunshine and warmer temps. It’s the most fun you can have on the snow!

Say goodbye to winter and prepare for spring with the Red River Pond Skim on March 19! This local favorite tests board balance and agility as snowboarders attempt to cross a pond and stay dry. Did your winter runs prepare you for the challenge?

With these events and more, it’s no surprise that winter is one of our favorite times of year in the Enchanted Circle. You can experience the slopes every day this winter when you own property in Angel Fire! The RE/MAX Mountain Realty of Angel Fire team is ready to find a property that’s perfect for you.
